kentmere
6 weeks since I last blogged. I think that may be a record. Things have been crazy busy round here but it is finally half-term. Phew. I’ve barely touched any of my WIPs for months now and with all the craziness my frazzled brain has been fit for garter stitch only. I was all for knitting scarf after scarf but Lily came to my rescue with a nifty little variation. This is Kentmere.
It looks quite innocent there doesn’t it – all simple garter stitchy-ness. The twist comes at the end… quite literally. She certainly had fun trying to write up the pattern.
The pattern gives instructions for 2 versions – nice plain garter for therapeutic TV knitting and another version in a textured stitch pattern. I knit the garter sample of course and Lily did the patterned one.
Garter stitch version shown in Fyberspates Scrumptious in DK/Worsted in the Water colourway.
Next is a DK version shown in Juno Fibre Arts Sirius DK. You can’t tell from the photographs but this yarn has a sparkly thread running through it.
If you’d like a chance to knit Kentmere for free just leave a comment before midnight GMT on 26th October. Lily will be picking 3 commenters at random to recieve a free copy.
And talking of free Lily Kate patterns, if you’re the lucky owner of an iPhone, iPad or and iPod Touch then you can grab a free copy of Issue 35 of The Knitter. Newsstand, the app that organises your magazine subscriptions is offering this issue free for a limited time only. The magazine features a Sarah Hatton design, Lily’s Langdale sweater and loads of other patterns.

Whilst we’re on the subject of magazines, have you seen this one?

Issue 1 was out just last week and early signs show it’s been super well-recieved. I have a personal interest in this one as lots of the photography is mine – including the cover!
It’s just one of the things keeping me so busy. If accessories and other small items in luxury yarns are your thing then grab yourself a copy. Issue 1 features a gorgeous lace shawl, a lacy beanie/mitten set, 2 cowls and much, much more.
Well done to the rest of the team at Practical Publishing – from concept to first issue in 6 months is pretty impressive I think you’ll agree!

The cowl is gorgeous! I especially love the garter stitch, but I think that’s the lazy person talking!
Congratulations Lily on all your successful endeavors!
I can’t wrap my head around Kentmere heh~ but I’m sure I can trust the pattern, keep on knitting, and voila, a lovely cowl!
Love to try it myself
I think it looks fascinating and I’m dying of curiosity to know what the “twists” are!
I knit Wray a few months back with some Wollmeise Lace yarn. I entered it into our State Fair and it won 2nd place! Love the pattern! This scarf looks lovely too!
I saw Kentmore in the Recently Added Patterns on Ravelry and of course I had to click on it! It looks like a brilliant design, and I would love love love to win a free copy of the pattern!
Apologies for the typo – KentmEre!!
What a fantastic scarf! Love it!
Mirjam
I would love to knit that!…very interesting and warm looking.
I love this pattern. I wish I could cast on tonight. I’ve been looking for an interesting cowl/neck piece and I think this might be the winner!
Oh gosh that is exactly what I’ve been looking to knit! I need a scarf I can wear at uni without dragging it around on the floor all the time by accident (quite often in sheep filled fields…) I love the yarns too!
Lovely scarf! Love it =)
That scarf od beautiful. Another fab design. Congratulations.
Looking very interesting. Möbius scarfs are great and this is even more interesting. Congratulations on your talented daughter.
Great pattern! I live in the US and searched for the newsstand app on the app store. It looks like it isn’t here in the us. I got zinio and scoop newsstand. Zinio has The Knitter but no free issue. Shoot!
Kaitlin
what a sweet pattern, I just want to cast on right this second!
Kentmere is gorgeous. I love both versions.
Such an ingenious construction! I’d love to win a copy
The pattern is great but I think anything would look good on the lovely Lily.
I just saw this on Ravelry and giggled. This looks like a lot of fun!
You are soooo clever :0)
Garter stitch is so soothing, yet so stunning in this cowl!
I love the look of this scarf – ideal for my discerning ‘baby’ nineteen year old daughter who is just about to write her final exams! She plans on studying fashion next year and would appreciate the simplicity of this pattern and the fact that her mum knitted it for her!
Celeste from South Africa
Cool looking scarf with some versitility! Can’t waiting to find out how the twists were made!
I LOVE this cowl. I’m a new knitter (all of 3 weeks) because it was suggested as therapy for broken fingers from a few months ago. I love this – for the ease of the garter stitch and the moving to more technique as my fingers/hands & eyes get better at this knitting thing.
I love this cowl and would love to make one!
Incidentally, I looked for the Newsstand app on my iPad and there are at least three apps with “newsstand” in the name and none that I could find with only that name…what app exactly is it that has the free issue of The Knitter?
Love that you can add any pattern you choose. I’m going to search for something that will fit the bill for it.
Congrats Amanda on more of your beautiful work!
Gorgeous pattern. Perfect too as an accompaniment to the two person mittens on Ravelry (where you hold hands inside the mitten). You could wear it as a couple whilst canoodling and both be equally warm!
This is a cute design. I love the concept and really look forward to knitting it at some point =D
I just saw your cowl, how pretty, myself included wants to know about the twist.
Beautiful and interesting folding!
What a great scarf. A perfect fall knit.
That looks brilliant!
Love your style chica. It doesn’t matter if I’m chosen, it would make a great xmas gift for any lady. I like way it layers and am interested to see how you made it twist. Hmmm…what’s in my stash?
Hi Amanda, it’s always great to see a post from you
Wow, thanks for the heads up on the Knitter, I’ve just downloaded it to my iPad:-). Usually I like a ‘real’ magazine, but if it’s free I’ll take it any time.
Love the cowls, and I’d love a chance of winning the pattern. Lily never ceases to amaze me with her creativity, I know you’re so proud of her. And you ,must be proud of yourself, that mag cover looks wonderful.
I wonder if it will hit the store here like Simply knitting and all the other ones. I’d ask my sister to mail it she’s always so busy and doesn’t use Paypal so it’s hard paying her back!!!!
Oh how cool! I can’t wait to knit this one up!
What a fantastic scarf!
Ooh! Interesting. Cowls and hats! I never tire of knitting them.
Kentmere looks like a very clever design. I think I like the garter version best.
Wow, your daughter never ceases to amaze me! I’ve been looking and looking at the cowl and I still can’t figure out how she did it. Would love the pattern just so I can go “Aha! That’s how!” And then knit myself one of course (-:
Lovely cowl. Your design is intriguing
I dream of having a daughter who can write wonderful patterns for me! What a talented duo!
I’m intrigued by this pattern and want to knit it even though I’m working on a deadline for Halloween. Knitted costumes are maybe not my best idea!
Oh my gosh, Lily you are a genius! I love the cowl and for people like me, it eliminates the frustration of trying to wrap it around your neck comfortably.
What a wonderful concept for a scarf. I quite like both. I bought the copy of The Knitter on the weekend and saw Lily’s pattern. I quite like that she has teen sizes in her patterns so I can knit them for my daughter!
Oooh, I love the patterned one. And the construction is awfully intriguing.
That looks gorgeous, I’d love to have a go at knitting this! I haven’t seen that new knitting magazine, I must take a look in our local shops to see if I can find a copy.
Love this idea!
Great cowl! A genius pattern.
Kentmere looks great and just the thing for my daughter (a year or so younger than Lily) who is at the garter stitch stage with her knitting but would like an interesting result. (Would it pair well with Urchin beret, I wonder?)
What a clever design! I would love to knit it.
How lovely!
This is gorgeous! So simple yet so lovely!
What a clever design! I love to see the work of young designers. It is so great to know that knitting will be a part of many generations to come. Knit on, Lily!
I love the idea of this! How did you get into designing? I’d love to be able to come up with these things!
What a great pattern!
Very clever design and just wanting to be in my pattern collection
Can’t wait to try it
Good luck on the mag will check it out
Love your “forward” thinking in pattern style. Please more more more. Thank you. I will now be a devoted follower.
That cowl/scarf is amazing! I’d love to have it!
Well this was a fab post to break your hiatus with! That is one fab looking pattern so please enter me in the draw for a copy but most of all big congrats on your blossoming knit photography career
I shall be looking at for a copy of the new magazine.
What an interesting construction of the cowl, and it looks oh-so cozy!
congrats on the magazine features
Beautiful patterns! Perfect for cozying up with a cup of tea to simply relax, and still feel productive.
Really lovely! Would love to get that pattern
Love it! Can’t wait to knit it. I can just imagine all the questions the unique design will bring up!
What fantastic cowls that is sure to be a classic! Great for dressing up and down. Lily is such a talented knitter and am looking forward to all the great things she still has to offer!
Such a lovely design with a twist. DD wants both! Best I do the patterned one and she can do the garter. Enjoy half term.
Yay i’d love the chance
Pick me pick me!
) What stitch pattern was used for the green dk one? Lovely!
How lovely! Lily to the rescue! The colorway of the garter stitch version looks so beautiful on Lily.
Congratulations on the magazine issue and your photographs. I hope I can find it in the states. Thank you for this wonderful offer to knit one of Lily’s originals!
Have always loved seeing what you two are up to — always great things, it seems, even when I don’t get to check in very much LOL. LOVE the cowl — I’m in a totally “destashing” mode and looking for elegant things — well, here we go!
And thanks so much for the app info — have just downloaded it. Congrats to both of you on such great projects all the time!
Wild! I can’t wait to see the pattern for this one!!!
I missed you two these past weeks. So nice to have you back!
I LOVE this cowl. I have yet to not love any of the patterns your have written. Definitely a must have for fall.
Wow! I love the simple look and that extra oomph with the twist!
I love Lily’s patterns. So elegant! The cowl is great. Keep it up!
Lovely pattern, talented mother-daughter duo
Love the Twist on garter stitch, looks like fun!
Absolutely love it! My daughter who lives in Seattle just asked if I could knit her a cowl so she would have something to put on when she takes her golden Cooper for a walk. I know she would love it.
OH MAN that scarf is awesome!!
Love both versions of the cowl! Would love to make one for my daughter who is away in college.
Beautiful pattern! Very versatile for fall and winter! I’m adding it to my Ravelry favorites!
Another lovely design by Lily!!
lovely pattern, wonderful and inspiring mother daughter duo.
I am in awe. Love the pattern, and really hope I win. Thanks for the opportunity.
Both versions are so pretty – I really love the yarn used on the textured one. Looks like a clever design. Congrats on the cover photo!
So pretty!
I’m thinking of entering to Knit Now as soon as I get a good idea…
Lily is so amazing. This is just the kind of project I need. Love it.
Well done both of you. Great cowl, great photos.
