What my hair means to me | Loose waves with ghd creative curl

It dawned on me the other day just how many hours of my life I’ve probably spent doing my hair.  Rather a lot, I realised!  I wouldn’t even consider myself a high maintenance kind of person, but still.  Add up all the time blow drying, brushing, curling, fixing into a haphazard messy bun on top of my head… and it’s a sizeable chunk of time.  Especially when your locks are as long as your arm like mine.  I’ve read countless blog posts about hair care and styling too, so I’m not entirely sure why it’s taken me almost 4 years of blogging to write one myself.  For some of us our hair’s such a big ‘thing’ to us and a part of our style – I’ve written about jeans and shoes enough times so why not the hair on my head?

Tbh the reason I haven’t written about it is probably because it isn’t anything remarkable – no edgy cuts or wacky colours around these parts.  But I seriously can’t imagine myself with anything but long, dark(ish) hair.  I’ve dabbled in dark red/auburn a few times (with mixed successes – once ending in highlighter orange) but never strayed too far from long and brown.  My year 6 bob was the last time I had short hair and I think I’d feel like a different person without it swishing around.  Do your ears not feel exposed with short hair huh?  Can’t imagine it.  I’ve toyed with the idea of a long bob a couple of times as my hair’s actually quite fine and might seem fuller if it was shorter, but always thought I’d regret it an hour after leaving the salon.  Too scared to do it, basically!

So whilst I’m keeping the long hair, loose relaxed waves will remain my absolute fave style.  My natural texture is somewhere between straight and wavy (with a side helping of Hagrid-esque frizz) – it’s neither here nor there and a bit of a pain.  Not jealous of natural swishy haired people at all, of course!  More often than not I blow dry mine straight, but lately I’ve fallen back in love with wand curling my hair with my new ghd creative curl wand.

Whilst I know hair this long needs attention, I don’t really want to be devoting a huge chunk of my day to it, so a ‘do that takes 5-10 minutes is perfect for me.  Don’t want to be wasting more hours than necessary on it do we?  Especially if the ‘oh so effortless straight out of Pinterest’ look is what you’re aiming for anyway.  I’m not sure how well you can see it in these shots, but the irregular shaped barrel of the creative curl wand makes the curls more natural and less ‘prom curl’ like, too.  Just as simple to use as any wand but the outcome’s just that bit nicer.

Now I’m not gonna pretend to be a hair guru about to open my own salon, but I’ve experimented over the years and found ways of curling which work far better than others.  Alternating direction of curling is often suggested to make the curls more natural, but it just looks messy for me!  Outwards from my face on both sides is my system.  I wrap my hair from as close to the roots to as near to the ends as I can without burning my fingers and/or scalp and use pretty big chunks of hair at a time.  The one thing that makes the biggest difference though is holding/pinning the curl in place to cool before letting it fall – way more effective than just holding your hair to the wand for longer!  Which  is good because that YouTube video where the girl’s hair burnt and fell off has scarred me for life.  I would honestly cry.

Fine hair can be a major pain in the ass at times, but one of its perks is how quickly it can be curled. A wand that heats up in no time (I genuinely can’t fathom how it does it but I’m not complaining) is a definite bonus too.  This gal always misjudges her timings and needs all the speedy prep help she can get.  Running late does not a good hair day make!

There we go, my hair’s had its first proper bloggy debut.  With my ghd creative curl wand’s help I’ll hopefully manage to up my good to bad hair day ratio now!

Your hair looks amazing. I love your hair color. My hair texture is also between straight and wavy. I like to braid my hair before sleep to get those soft waves. xo

Thank you! It’s faded quite a bit since I dyed it but some of the red is still there 🙂 Braided hair works so well for some people, but I always end up looking like I’ve used a dodgy crimper haha.

I looks really great with those “natural” curls. I bought a curling iron last year to do ringlets in my little daughter’s hair for a ballet show. Ugh! She has poker straight super slippery hair that is impossible to do a good job with. I wish bought one with a bigger barrel too.

Thanks Max! I bet that’s a nightmare, you’d have to curl tiny pieces at a time for ringlets! The big barrels are easy for loose waves 🙂

I love having long hair and I don’t think I cut ever cut it to a bob. I ought to experiment more with my hair but usually blow drying it and tying it up into a ponytail is as far as it goes! x

Yay for long hair! It’s like a comfort blanket haha 🙂 That’s why I like styles like this that don’t take long, it’s different but not too much experimentation!
