a short break in pembrokeshire

So, Wales!  I’ve already gushed about our cute cottage a plenty, but obviously we didn’t drive all that way (and boy is it a long way), just to sit in a cottage.  Gotta explore the area too!  Pembrokeshire has been on my UK ‘must visit’ list for a while now (blog post idea?) so I jumped at the opportunity to see those stunning landscapes for myself.  With only 2 full days in the area and not the best weather forecast, my mum and I had to make the most of the rain free slots – a task I’d like to think we accomplished.  A UK summer break is never going to be the same as a trip to sunnier climes – although I imagine those Pembrokeshire beaches on hot days are beautiful – but it’s certainly just as lovely in its own way.

Since several of you liked the way I wrote my Cologne blog post as a simple diary, I thought I’d take a similar approach with this one.  Here goes!

Martin’s Haven

Shortly after arriving we headed straight out again in search of those oh so famous beaches.  Turned out we couldn’t quite make it down to the sea at this one as the tide was in, but the heathery clifftops sufficed!  Marloes was our first stop, followed by Martin’s Haven right at the very tip of the peninsula.  From the cliffs is a great viewpoint over to Skomer Island, so fab for photography.

I imagine sunset here would have been absolutely stunning.  We were too hungry to hang around to find out.

Whenever I’m in a place like this I always find myself saying ‘imagine living in that house’, and then pondering what it would be like to live in (what feels like) the middle of nowhere.  Beautiful, but isolated – can’t decide whether I’d like it or not!  I definitely love visiting though.

dress: New Look

I guess you could say it was a tad windy up there.  Personally I think this is the best hairstyle I’ve ever had.

Pembroke Castle

What’s a UK trip without popping by a castle huh?  We spent our first morning exploring Pembroke Castle, reading snippets of the history and climbing up turrets because that’s just what you do at castles.

We’d have stayed longer to watch more of the falconry had it not started raining – we stayed long enough to see the seagulls lose it when these big guys came out, and then ran for cover.

Lunch in Milford Haven

Huge acai smoothie and The Yummiest Chicken Salad Ever would hit the spot right now!  We lunched at Foam on Milford Haven marina, which was A) super tasty, and B) super Instagrammable, so all was good.

We didn’t see too much of Milford Haven itself besides the harbour and Tesco, but what we did see looked rather lovely.

Dale beach

We’d planned to head back to our cottage for a few hours after lunch, but on seeing the skies brighten up and the clouds clear we decided to make the most of it and explore a little more.  The following day’s weather forecast wasn’t looking too pretty so I thought we should make the most of it whilst we could!  I’m so glad we did, too; these tiny coastal villages were well worth a stop and looked so pretty in the sunshine.

Lived life on the edge and swapped the classic 99 by the seaside for a froyo.  I live dangerously, you see.

I can’t quite believe there’s only one pastel house photo in this post!  Almost every town we drove through had buildings of all shades and I loved how bright and cheerful they looked.  Must be a thing in this part of the world.

Broad Haven

The final stop on our windy tour and possibly the windiest.  Didn’t stop many a determined Brit with a windbreak though, and plenty of people seemed to be having a fab time out surfing and swimming.  If you’re looking for a slightly quieter alternative to the busy beaches of Cornwall, this area is definitely it.

Anddd on our final day the heavens truly opened, so we took full advantage of our cosy cottage and chilled out by the fire, drinking as many brews as is humanly possible.

Our accommodation in Pembrokeshire was complimentary thanks to Coastal Cottages, however all opinions are my own.

This post reminded me of my little UK holidays I’d always go on as a child, days spent wandering round these little towns, freezing cold but still eating ice cream anyway! The pictures look so lovely, glad you had a good time!

I bet it’s such a fun place to explore as a child! We always went to the Lake District and did exactly the same haha, acted like it was boiling hot even when it was chucking it down. Glad you like my photos!

LOL @ the heavens truly opened. I visited Llandudno also in Wales a few weeks ago and it was gorgeous. Pembokeshire looks so lovely, there’s just something about these Welsh coastal towns right? Love the photos and enjoyed reading your travel diary Lily Kate! xx
