twenty eight | where will I be 10 years from now?

Hello from Majorca!  Having a fabulous time, but more on that later.  I’m using my new passport for the first time this weekend, and safe to say I had a bit of a shock when I saw the expiration date on it.  10 years from now, duhhh.  I’ll still be carrying that pic around when I’m TWENTY EIGHT.  What the???  Am I adult enough now that 10 years from now I’ll be the same person?  The photo isn’t even that bad (compared to my old ID that had me laughed at every time I used it, anyway), but I can pretty much guarantee my 28 year old self will cringe anyway.  Because so much will have changed by then.  Exactly how/what I have no idea, but 10 years from now my life will look a hell of a lot different.

If I were to follow a similar timeline to my mum, I’ll have a screaming newborn with a funny shaped head the day before my 28th birthday.  (Said newborn was me, btw.  Looked like an alien that first week).  Maybe I’ll have a toddler, or maybe I’ll not even feel ready to consider it by then.  My nan was married with 2 children by 19, and that’s just crazy to think she already had a 10 year old by 28.  Can categorically say that that won’t be happening.

Maybe I’ll be winging it and fudging together a bunch of different careers all at once, because I’m forever indecisive and like to consider myself a jack of all trades.  Maybe blogging/internetting will lose its sparkle and social media will collapse in on itself and won’t factor in there at all, and I’ll have a full time 9-5… although I can’t imagine that one.  Social media imploding – yep I can see potential for that.  Me in a standard 9-5 – not so sure!  That sounds ridiculously naive I know, and I’ll probably have to at some point, but I just can’t imagine it.

What will I look like?  My mum?  My nan?  Will I still have long hair or will some turn of events convince me that a bob is a good idea?  Will my style be pretty similar to now?  Probably won’t change that much.

Where will I live?  Will I have moved hundreds of miles from home, or will I not have strayed too far?  What will my house be like?  Will I live in one place for ages or will I flit around lots?  When will I move away from my parents?

Will I have wrapped my head round adulting by then?  I mean, I can cook and do washing and get myself from A to B pretty well already, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg, I know.  Much more adulting and responsibility to come lol.

How many countries will I have visited?  How many interesting people will I have met?  How many crazy stupid things will I have done, and how many non-crazy, really bloody good things, too?

So much pointless wondering.  I’m seriously glad I don’t have a fixed goal in mind, and that I don’t believe in fate.  I don’t think anything’s predetermined, or that there’s any kind of higher power with control.  Life’s just a series of chance events and possibilities, half the time it’s who you know not what you know, and big things (good or bad) can come of small decisions.  I’ve learnt that much already in my 18 years of infinite wisdom, lol.   All these questions to answer before my passport expires and I have to replace my current bad-hair-day mugshot with my 28 year old face.  Wow. 🙂

Wow 10 years! In Canada, they were talking about going for a 10 year passport too. Maybe the have already. Mine may be expired as I went to Cork City Ireland in 2009 on a 5 yr one.

You will probably be really different, but still you. People have been saying things like that to me as my daughter Iris is going to be 10 in June. Stuff like where did that baby go? If I can make some predictions, I think you will feel really grown up. You will be pro-ing the adulting. When I look back at my 28 yr old self, I think I was young, but I remember feeling very wise at the time. You will have it sorted. The details? How exactly will you “turn out”? I am looking forward to reading about it!

I know right! You don’t have 10 year ones already?
I’ll still be me for sure, still doing the same daft things. 🙂 Learning how to adult along the way!
Wow she’s grown up quickly! It must be so exciting to watch her grow and become her own person. 🙂

I think they have them now, as of 2014 or so, but it is optional. Something about paying $40 more and you can get the 10 yr one, while the 5 is still available. Ah well, I am not going anywhere for a while… sigh.

Oh! I also know now that your mum is 46 yrs old. Yeah, it is exciting that I can have a 10 year old soon, but doing the math, I suppose I could have had an 18 yr old too. I am 45. So maybe you will have a child by the time you are 28 like your mum, or maybe you won’t, like me.

I’m 29 next week and I’ve been looking back on the decade from 18-28 and I have to say, it was fantastic. I got a degree, travelled the world, met my best friend, moved cities and set up home and a new life for myself, spent many many nights having far too much to drink and dancing til dawn, worked in a crazy variety of interesting jobs, fell in love, fell out of love, met my husband, got married, and had a baby last year.

As a ‘blimey I’m nearly 30’ present to myself I’m starting an MA with the open university this Autumn – it’s something I always wanted to do but never got round to. I can’t wait to see what my thirties will bring

Enjoy every second. Life is so precious and every new stage is an adventure. I bloody loved my 20s, I’m sure you will too!

Thank you for leaving such a lovely comment Izzy! It soulds like you’ve had an amazing 10 years and lived life to the fullest (the good bits and the bad bits) and that’s exactly how I think it should be 🙂 Pro at adulting now, too!
You and I will be starting the open university at the same time! I’m starting a Bsc with them this autumn too. Works just as well at any age!
I’m sure you’ll love your thirties just as much too! I’m looking forward to my twenties already 😀
