so i made a dress

vogue-sewing-pattern-v8900

Talk about throwing myself in at the deep end with sewing!  I loved the cutout sides and cutaway shoulders of this Vogue pattern so decided to give it a go as my first dress made from scratch.  Why not ey?  The sporty/girly style seemed very ‘me’.  Apart from adding the fiddly bias facings around the cutouts, the rest was fairly straightforward.  With about 50 million pins I managed to keep the curved princess seams and edges neat, and I’m pretty proud of the end product!

Yep, those cutouts were a bit of a bugger to sew.  Worth it though!

Pattern is Vogue V8900, with a shorter hemline.

What to make next?  Structured shapes with fitted details always catch my eye but I think it may be good to make something more casual next. Let me know if you have any favourite pattern recommendations.  I’ve only one day left before I’m back at school and the sun is forecast to shine, so hopefully bank holiday shall be spent in the garden mopping up revision. 🙂

You’re so good at this! Would you have any interest in collaborating with me on my line of photo-printed clothing and accessories? I won’t have a sewing machine when I’m in England so I’m kind of screwed in that department unless I find someone who does – was thinking I’d cover the materials and someone could (help me) do the labor, and then we could split the profit on the things that sold. Thoughts?

Thanks Lix! Your line sounds really interesting but I just have way too much on to take on something like that! I’ve only been able to take on these projects because it’s been the holidays and have a crazy exam schedule from now on!

A success, I think. A lot of the elements look like a ton of work! I also say that you should tackle things head on, especially with crafts. It’s really fabulous on you!

Thanks Max! They were quite a bit of work and definitely took longer than expected, but were more awkward than difficult to do. Tackling things head on is the best way in my book!

This is breathtaking. White is a great colour on you.

On another note, I noticed that the armscye on the model is slightly closer? Do you think that it’s a result of the particular fabric chosen, or that it’s affected rather by the bust measurement?

Thank you Abi! I think the armscye is probably different because I made a larger size (to be on the safe side!) and then took it in at the sides quite a bit, which may have affected the overall line 🙂

This looks great! I love the shape of it. Is there any chance you still have the pattern and I could borrow/buy it? I was trying to get it somewhere but impossible to find 🙁
